Firefighters advance initial
line while crew vents window in fire apartment
March 19, 2002. Firefighters were called at 11:22am to 9463 Muirkirk Rd. for a reported closet on fire in an apartment. When the first unit arrived heavy smoke was showing from the building with reports of people trapped. Chief 28A (West Lanham Hills VFD) was in the area and was first to arrive. He quickly entered the building to assist in evacuation of residents. A second alarm was called due to the amount of fire and continuing reports of trapped people. Crews made an aggressive interior attack to contain the fire. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries and there were no reports of civilian injuries. The cause of the fire is listed as children playing with matches.
