Dec. 1, 2000. Laurel Firefighters, along with firefighters from several surrounding companies, battled a 2 alarm fire at the St. Phillips Episcopal Church.  The fire, which started in the basement of the historic church at 6th and Main Steets, caused extensive damage to the building.  First arriving crews held the fire to the basement with some extension to the first floor.  The fire was extinguished in about 25 minutes with crews remaining on the scene several hours for overhaul.  The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.  No injuries were reported.
