Early Morning Apartment Fire Keeps Fire Fighters Busy

Heavy smoke billows from 8th St. Apartment Building
December 17th, 2001.  Fire broke out at 1am in a 3 story garden apartment building on 8th St.  The building at 811 8th St. sustained moderate to heavy damage when fire traveled between the floors and walls.  The initial report was for smoke in a first floor apartment.  Engine 103, first to arrive on the scene, found smoke coming from the second and third floors along with the eaves and roof.   Once in the building the crew encountered fire in the walls with extension to several rooms.  Extensive overhaul was needed to expose all of the fire in the walls and ceilings.  Two additional truck companies were dispatched to assist.  No injuries were reported and companies cleared the scene around 5am.
