Tanker comes to rest in
a ditch on the ramp from south bound I95 to east bound Rt.198
Feb. 19, 2001. Shortly before 3:30pm units from Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad and Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department 41 (Calverton) were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle crash involving an overturned tanker. First arriving units found a gasoline tanker overturned and leaking. A level III hazmat response was immediately requested. This brought the Prince George's County Hazardous Materials Team along with teams from Howard County Fire Department, Walter Reed Fire Department, Andrews Air Force Base Fire Department, and Maryland Department Of The Environment.
Crews worked to contain the leak while the hazmat teams worked on off-loading the gasoline into other tank trucks. Laurel VFD Engines 103 and 101 provided the west side water supply, laying over 1000 feet of 5 inch supply line from Switzer Lane. Montgomery Co. Engine 921 supplied the foam operation, which included a crash truck from Andrews Air Force Base and the foam unit from College Park Company 12.
Units were released around 2am after most of the 8,700 gallons of gasoline was emptied from the tank and the truck uprighted.
