LVFD Receives Award At Annual AMVETS & Thrift Store Community Service Awards

LVFD Deputy Chief Bryan Lau, AMVETS Auxiliary President Betty Lou Carwithen, AMVETS Maryland State Commander Ron Hall and Thrift Store Centers Executive Administrator Marcena J. Cain.
Dec. 8th, 2000.  The 15th Community Service Awards were presented by AMVETS and The Thrift Stores.  Contributions were made to Public Safety Agencies and Veterans organizations in Maryland and Delaware.  Several Laurel Agencies received contributions for specific programs including the Laurel Advocacy and referral Service, Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel Police Department and the Laurel Rescue Squad.

The contribution received by the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department will be used for fire prevention activities.  In accepting the contribution, Deputy Chief Lau said that the contribution will help with the Smoke Detector Program.  Smoke detectors and batteries are available without charge to residents that do not have a working smoke detector.  In addition, the department will check for working smoke detectors on all calls for service.  If the resident does not have a working smoke detector, one will be provided at that time.

Working smoke detectors have been credited with saving countless lives and significantly reducing property loss.
