LVFD Firefighter Ken Wilson Awarded Bronze Medal Of Valor

We send our sincere congratulations to our own Ken Wilson who was recently awarded the Bronze Medal of Valor. He received the award at the Annual P.G. County Public Safety Valor Awards Luncheon on April 30, 2009. Firefighter Wilson was awarded the bronze medal for assisting with the rescue of a 5 year old child on I-95 near Beltsville on December 15, 2008. While riding with his mother, the child stopped breathing when his seatbelt got entangled around his neck. Maryland State Police Trooper C.M. Hammond from the MSP barracks in College Park, was the first arriving responder. Trooper Hammond removed the seat belt from around the child’s neck. Hearing the incident over his radio while returning home on I-95, Firefighter Wilson stopped to assist the Trooper with patient care. After identifying himself, he immediately opened the child’s airway and started CPR. The 5 year old Baltimore child was transported by medics to Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Despite quick lifesaving measurers from both Trooper Hammond and Firefighter Wilson, tragically, the child succumbed to his injuries. As noted at the award ceremony, for zeal, compassion and self sacrifice, Firefighter Ken Wilson of the LVFD Company 10, was awarded the Bronze Medal of Valor. "You've got to be kitten me!"
Feline Rescue in Old Laurel

OCTOBER 24, 2008 - Firefighters at the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department answered a rather unusual phone call. A citizen called the firehouse, and explained that a boy's 6 month old kitten, Roxy, had been in a tree for three days. The caller proceeded to explain that she had exhausted all other resources, and asked the L.V.F.D. to assist in extricating the young cat from the tree.

The engine company proceeded over to the scene, located in the 900 block of Montgomery Street, and found that Roxy was, in fact, up in a tree. In fact, she was about thirty feet up, and, quite literally, out on a limb. Seeing as how this was outside the scope of engine company resources, the crew returned to the station and picked up the tower.

In the end, a 35 foot ladder, in conjunction with a rope bag and sixteen foot pike pole, were employed to remove Roxy. After some coaxing, Roxy jumped from the limb and landed in a nearby evergreen tree, and descended the tree. After landing on terra firma, she made a prompt beeline for her home. No injuries were reported, including those to the frisky feline.

L.V.F.D. Ambulance Awarded Seal of Excellence

Earlier this year, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department purchased a used ambulance to provide enhanced EMS support to the citizens of the greater Laurel area. Recently, Laurel Volunteer Fire Department’s Ambulance 108 was awarded the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (M.I.E.M.S.S.) voluntary ambulance inspection program’s seal of excellence. By achieving this certification, the L.V.F.D. has far surpassed the current standards set forth by Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department.

The seal of excellence certifies that L.V.F.D membership meets certain training requirements and staffing standards for this vehicle. The inspection involves verification of supply and equipment inventories necessary to adequately care for patients in the pre-hospital setting. All equipment, including all of the communication equipment, including the ambulance itself, have been tested and inspected to ensure their proper and safe operation. The initial certification period is for two years. The L.V.F.D. joins the ranks of only two other departments in Prince George’s County, Glenn Dale and Berwyn Heights, that have passed this rigorous inspection in recent years.

The members of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department would like to congratulate and extend their thanks and appreciation for the hard work of Engine Captain Trey Kelso and the LVFD ambulance committee: Technicians Kevin Frost and Dave Cunningham, Assistant Chief Travis Pearcy, and Firefighters DJ Hull and Chris Stanton, that all put forth to attain this recognition.

Townhouse Fire in Laurel
LVFD puts two engines and a chief on the street for early morning townhouse fire

APRIL 20, 2008 - Firefighters from the Laurel VFD, as well as other firefighters from Prince George's, Howard, Anne Arundel and Montgomery Counties, were dispatched to a reported townhouse in the 8000 block of Cherry Lane. First arriving Engine 101 (Engine 810) arrived to find smoke showing from the rear of an end of the row townhouse in the 14800 block of Ashford Court. A working fire dispatch was sounded, and an interior fire attack began. The crew from E101 found a fire in the interior wall of the rear of the townhouse, which was reportedly under renovation. The blaze caused an estimated $30,000 worth of damage, and Prince George's County fire investigators have determined the cause of the fire to be electrical in nature.

3 Boxes and a Street Assignment
All within 2 hours

APRIL 19, 2008 - Firefighters at the LVFD were kept busy running fire calls, as 3 box alarms for various degrees of building fires were dispatched, as well as a street alarm, reporting an apartment fire in the area. Fortunately for the community, none of the incidents were severe in nature. One box alarm, in the 13800 block of Belle Chase Boulevard, was found to be a microwave oven on fire. The fire was contained by a dry chemical fire extinguisher. No cause or damage estimate is available.

The other two box alarms were found to be related to either food on the stove, or people grilling outside of their apartments.

The LVFD also advises area residents that Prince George's County law requires them to keep barbeques (or grilles) off apartment balconies, and to keep them a minimum of thirty (30) feet from the building.
