LVFD Lieutenant's Son Raises Money For FDNY Injured Fire Fighter

Zachary Blankenship and his mother Lara during Channel 4 interveiw

Poster that Zach made describing the family trip to FDNY
October 4, 2004.  Zachary Blankenship is no stranger to the fire service.  His father and grandfather both are members of the LVFD.  Zach, 9 years old, took it upon himself to help a brother fire fighter in need.  His mother, Lara Blankenship, tells the story best.  "Zachary had a teacher that had an ongoing relationship with the guys at Rescue 1 in New York City.  After Sept. 11, she began taking letters and pictures students had made up to the guys.  Eventually things tapered off, but Zachary kept on writing and drawing.  His father and I knew nothing of this at the time, but Zachary started bringing things home from FDNY. (mugs, hats, and t-shirts)  We went to visit the station over Thanksgiving last year and Zach got to meet a few of the firefighters there.  One of them was Mike Geidel.  We later found out that Mike’s brother Gary had been killed on Sept. 11, (two weeks before his retirement).   Last week Zach’s teacher, Connie Merrick, called and said that Mike’s other brother, Ralph, has throat cancer, directly attributed to his digging at Ground Zero.  She asked  if there was anything Zach could do, and from that it has snowballed into a media storm.  Ralph, Mike and Gary, as well as their father, Ret. Lt. Paul Geidel worked out of Rescue 1, Mike is still there.  He was so warm to us when we were there, and from this we have learned that there are no boundaries in brotherhood".
This evening, Channel 4 News visited the firehouse to tell Zach's story.  It will air tonight on the 11pm news. If you would like to help Zach raise money for Ralph Geidel, come by the LVFD on Sunday October 10th between 1pm and 5pm to drop off your donation.
