Location

The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD), Prince George's County Fire Department Company 10 is located at 7411 Cherry Lane in the City of Laurel, Maryland. Laurel is situated in the northernmost portion of Prince George's County Maryland and borders three other Maryland counties: Howard, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel. The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department responds to mutual aid calls in each of these neighboring counties.

Our Department owns and operates three engines, a ladder tower, a mobile command unit, and several support vehicles out of our station.

Staffing

While the number of incidents to which we respond is very high for a volunteer company, we do have some help. On weekdays, excluding holidays, The Prince George's County Fire Department staffs our station with four career (paid) firefighters: one captain, one technician (driver), and two firefighters. They work from 0700 hrs. until 1500 hrs. (3:00 pm).

During these weekday hours incidents are handled by a combination of all-volunteer, all-career, or part volunteer/part career staff. During all other hours the Laurel VFD responds with an all-volunteer crew. Our department has a long history of working very well with the career staff stationed there.

Laurel, Maryland Public Safety Agencies

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to find a fire station's phone number in the phone book? The reason most stations don't list a public service phone number is that the stations are not equipped to properly accept emergency calls from the public. All requests for public safety assistance should go through the 911 system.

When the 911 system was first set up, the 911 call takers would ask if you were reporting an emergency. If you answered "No", you were often told that the call taker could not help you. The 911 call takers no longer ask this question. Unfortunately, the word hasn't gotten to everyone yet. We now strongly urge you to use the 911 system for any public safety issues. While we can't speak for all locations in the U.S., DO NOT CALL ANY FIRE STATION IN THE GREATER LAUREL AREA TO REPORT AN EMERGENCY OR NON-EMERGENCY INCIDENT. If we are out handling another incident, there may not be anyone in the station to answer the phone. Always dial 911; if we're busy handling other emergencies, Communications will dispatch the next available unit.

* - These are Anne Arundel County's old VHF frequencies. AACo now uses a trunked 800 MHz system county-wide, and their VHF frequencies are supposed to be patched in to the appropriate channel for units without their 800 MHz system radios (like us). In reality, we find it very difficult to communicate with Anne Arundel County Communications or units.
